What age must I be to apply?
You must be at least 18 years old but not yet 50 by midnight on the closing date of the competition.

Do I need to speak Irish?
No, but you must be proficient in either Irish or English. However, you will need to study and pass an Irish module during training.

Is there a special Irish language recruitment stream?
Yes. If you are fluent in Irish, you can apply through the Irish Language Stream. You’ll need to pass a competency-based interview in Irish (minimum B2 level) and, if successful, may be assigned to a Gaeltacht area.

Do I need a degree?
No, a degree is not required. If you are in the final year of a degree when offered a place, you may defer your start date to complete it.

What are the educational requirements?
You need at least one of the following:
✅ A Leaving Certificate with a minimum grade of O6/D3 in five subjects.
✅ A Level 5 Major Award (120 Credits) on the NFQ.
✅ A qualification at Level 5 or higher deemed equivalent by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)

Can anyone from any country apply?
You must be:
✅ A citizen of the EU, EEA, UK, or Switzerland.
✅ A refugee or someone with subsidiary protection under Irish law.
✅ A resident in Ireland for at least one year continuously and have lived here for four of the last eight years.

Citizenship & Residency Requirements

I am a Garda Reserve. Can I apply through a special process?
Yes, a separate recruitment stream exists for serving Garda Reserve members who:
✅ Have completed their probationary period.
✅ Have served at least 120 hours per year in two of the last four years.

Can experienced police officers from other countries apply directly to specialist units?
No. All recruits must enter through the standard process. Specialist unit applications are only available after completing two years of service as a probationary Garda.

What are the physical fitness requirements?
All applicants must pass a Physical Competency Test (PCT) as part of the selection process. You must also maintain fitness during training, with regular assessments.

What if I have a pre-existing health condition?
All candidates must undergo a medical assessment. You must declare any medical conditions and may need to provide additional reports from your doctor.

What if I take prescribed medication?
Before the Substance Misuse Test, you will be able to declare any prescribed medications.

Can I apply if I have tattoos?
It depends on the location:
Not allowed: Tattoos on the face, head, or hands.
Allowed: Tattoos in other areas, if they are not offensive.

How long does recruitment take?
The process varies, but it can take 6 to 18 months, depending on the number of applicants and your progression through each stage.

The Recruitment Process

Do I have to live in the college during training?
Yes, Garda Trainees must live on campus Monday-Friday. You can apply for permission to leave overnight if needed.

Can I work part-time while training?
No. You must leave all previous employment before starting at the Garda College.

What is life like in the Garda College?

Where will I be assigned after training?
After training, newly attested Gardaí are assigned to stations based on operational needs across Ireland. You must be willing to work anywhere in the country.
